5. Half-Life 2 (And Expansions) Howls Of The Infected
Plenty of games use nonsense sounds or audio manipulation software to create creepy sound effects designed to get the player out of their comfort zone. Half-Life 2 does this with the zombies and other various infected that you encounter. Usually, when you find them, the zombies in HL2 make this weird shrieking noise that at first seems to be just a scary monster-type sound and thats disturbing enough. If you use a tool to reverse and manipulate the sound, however, it gets way more creepy because its a human voice screaming OH GOD, OH GOD, HELP ME over and over and over. Then theres the City 17 police infected from HL2: Episode 1, which also make a weird howling noise and dont generally sound like anything we could understand. But then some sound-whizz manipulated their cries as well and theres some ultra-weird stuff in there. It sounds like these infected officers are reliving their last moments of humanity, screeching out words including infestation, parasites, and necrotics inbound. Uhhhh.. Nope. Thats the cue to turn round and get the hell out of there.
