Between the Arkham series, Shadow of Mordor and now Mad Max, it's clear that the gaming division of WB is bringing back licensed games in a big way. No longer just bargain bin knock-offs slapped together in order to make a big buck, movie adaptations these days (at least the ones from WB) always promise to rival the quality and the polish of even the most successful blockbuster releases.
But unfortunately for Mad Max, the game was suffocated by the likes of Metal Gear Solid V when it released last year. Taking the formula of the open world Arkham games and adding in a dash of brutally visceral vehicular combat, exploring the desolate wasteland of Mad Max is incredibly addictive.
Drawing from the entire history of the franchise, Avalanche Studios' first attempt at the series completely nailed the atmosphere and the insane action of the movies. And, thankfully, for the first time in ages the developers gave players a sense of character progression that felt genuinely essential.
No longer were you going from quest-marker to quest-marker to unlock useless things like "+2% accuracy", instead you're scouring distinct locations for brand new vehicles, essential resources and hidden areas that actually added substantial content to the game.
It's a great tie in, but unfortunately, just like the films before it, Mad Max's digital equivalent was only appreciated by a small cult following of hardcore fans.
