13. Its Western Name Is A Pun

It may have abandoned the terrifying mansion interior of the original and gallivanted off across the world - thereby making the name 'Resident' bit slightly redundant - but as Resi was called 'Biohazard' in Japan, Capcom needed a more unique title for Western shores.

Sony/Capcom man Chris Kramer states:

"Capcom Japan had let us know that the name of the game was going to be ‘Biohazard' in Japan, but I pointed out to the person who ran marketing at the time that it would be next to impossible for Capcom to register the name in the US.I pointed out that a crappy DOS-based game had just come out in the US called ‘Biohazard' (not to mention the New York hardcore band of the same name) and that we'd never be able to secure the mark. As a result, the head of marketing held a company-wide contest to come up with a new name for the game."

'Resident Evil' was plucked from these entries, as Capcom apparently liked the humour of relating a bunch of mercenaries to being holed up, fighting the undead in a mansion.

Get it? Because it's a large, residential home filled with zombies? Resident Evil. Honestly, I'd never connected the dots until now.
