Before GoldenEye proved first-person shooters could even be done on consoles, and way before Halo redefined the genre again in 2001, Capcom were planning on releasing the original Resident Evil as an FPS.

Such an approach to horror would eventually hit its stride across the 2010s, as everything from Slender Man to P.T. and Gone Home (even Resident Evil 7 is reportedly set entirely in first-person), but sadly, due to the limitations of the PS1 architecture of the time, they had to can the idea altogether.

Thankfully, in the process of spacing out checkpoints to create tension, limiting item use and having zombies shuffling around, populating the environment, Capcom inadvertently invented the survival horror genre - albeit one that was forced into having static backgrounds and an isometric view, just to get it running.
