Despite waning in popularity following the release of the fourth game and Primal, the Far Cry franchise is still one of the kings of the open world genre. Attempting to shake up the Ubisoft sandbox formula, the upcoming fifth game looks to be a huge departure for the series, moving away from exotic overseas landscapes in favour of focusing on domestic conflicts in the heart of the USA.

Still, although the setting and narrative focus have shifted massively, the central open-ended approach to gameplay has remained intact. The environment is once again the player's biggest asset, with animals, traps and the very world itself all being able to be manipulated to gain the upper hand in combat.

Likewise, while the titles have never been known for their narratives, Ubisoft's highlighting of religion and cults in an American setting has the potential to facilitate some fresh and relevant stories, no doubt anchored by the series' always-excellent villains.

Throw in the ability to play the entire game in co-op, and Far Cry 5 is looking to be the most ambitious - and most controversial - instalment in the series yet.
