15 Most Badass Monologues In Video Game History

14. "Rise And Shine, Mr Freeman..." (Half-Life 2)

The continuing mystery surrounding the powers, goals and role of the G-Man in the Half-life series has, if anything, embellished his introductory speech to Half-life 2 with more eeriness as time's gone by. From that strange off-key voice, to his monotone calmness as he asks you to wake up to "smell the ashes" of a ruined world that you were partly responsible for creating.

Contrary to the rousing speeches you find in various military shooters, or the majestic intros to most RPGs, this speech is minimal, unsettling, but in its own way quite profound. The moment where G-Man says that the "the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world" is a brilliant moment of perspective, establishing his seemingly omniscient understanding of Gordon's situation, as well as his role as G-Man's helpless pawn.
