Metacritic Score: 93 (PS4) A polarising game because it's at once a near-masterpiece and one of the most disappointing games of the year, Hideo Kojima's insanely ambitious open-world sequel boasts the slickest, most satisfying gameplay of the series...but wraps a weak story, mild characterisation, and a general feeling of incomplete-ness around it. As fun as the game is to play from moment to moment, the problems are numerous: the story is bare bones which is sure to be disappointing to long-time MGS fans, Big Boss is a mostly silent character throughout, other classic characters appear but are barely alluded to, the missions are incredibly repetitive, boss fights lack the MGS charm and and most can be avoided, to get the "proper" ending you need to slog through a litany of side missions (though this is never really made clear), and then there's the highly controversial plot twist that fans have either deemed genius or Kojima taking a steaming defecation on his legacy. It looks gorgeous, plays like butter and has so much potential to be one of the best games ever made, but it falls short because, whether Hideo dropped the ball or Konami didn't give him the funds to finish the much-discussed third chapter, it doesn't so much feel like an ending to Big Boss' story as the beginning of the end.
