15 Most Infuriating Video Game Boss Battles Of The 2000s
11. Elizabeth Greene - Prototype
Radical Entertainment are the heavy metal record of the games industry; big, brash, self-aware ridiculous and whole lot of fun. They've given us awesome games like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and here, Prototype - a middle finger-flipping response to the whole "With great power comes great responsibility" ideology. "F-that" anti-hero Alex Mercer seemed to scream, "I'm going to gobble up entire platoons of soldiers in one go, before slamming otherworldly creatures face-first through entire lanes of traffic." Prototype let you indulge in all these escapist power fantasies with no restraint - until coming across Elizabeth Greene, a mutated abomination who ends up taking up an entire intersection as she starts firing homing missiles your way. Taking her down was unbelievably difficult considering how one-sided everything else had been up to this point, and being she was essentially a bullet-sponge who'd take a good hour to whittle down (all while taking huge chunks of your life away with one hit) it meant you could still lose within seconds, despite mere fractions of her life bar being left. The essence of what makes a great boss battle is hidden away in here somewhere - the old 'insurmountable obstacle' thing - but like Ms. Greene, it's so twisted and ugly that all you can do is bash your head against it until you emerge on the other side.
