15 Most Mind-Blowing Video Game Plot Twists Of The 2000s
8. The Boss' Mission Was Actually To Be Killed By You - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid's story will forever be remembered as one for the ages, a ridiculously complex cavalcade of self-aware plotlines discussing everything from human cloning to advanced A.I. systems replicating global political economies, one tale of the world's greatest soldier setting it in motion. Lead designer Hideo Kojima pretty much made it up as he went along (and you can tell, but it's what makes it so incredible), however when it came to Snake Eater and his second turn on PS2 hardware, you could tell Koj had really knuckled down and learnt from the overly contrived plot mishaps of part two. To that end, we got one of the best-told and emotionally resonant tales in the series; that of Snake's mentor The Boss looking to defect to the Soviet Union, taking some American nuclear warheads with her as a statement of intent. It all goes sour when Soviet Colonel Volgin lets one of them off, making it look like America has attacked Russia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvKGqNWKhxk Snake Eater keeps its cards close to its chest as you play as Snake, trying to understand his mentor's motives whilst also attempting to avert all-out nuclear warfare. At the close of the game, it's revealed Boss never truly defected, instead she was working on the secretest of missions the whole time, initially attempting to get close to Volgin, but later having her objective changed to die at the hands of Snake. She opted to accept all responsibility for the explosion, dying as a traitor in the eyes of the world but known to Snake as the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
