15 Most Overrated Video Games Of The Generation (So Far)
12. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Hellblade is one of the most unique games of 2017. Tackling some pretty dense subject matter, the game beautifully presents a tale of psychosis and mental anguish throughout its short six-hour campaign.
Revelling in atmosphere and impactful visuals, at times the game is like a David Lynch film come to life, unlike anything else in the medium. As a story and as a surreal psychological trip, Hellblade succeeds in spades; but as a game, the title fails miserably.
The main problem is that the bulk of the gameplay is taken up by a few different puzzles that repeat constantly for the entirety of the runtime. They do have a thematic purpose, but it's not enough to justify how much they drag the game down.
Having to stop every five minutes to tackle the same type of challenge you've already completed twenty times is draining, and it makes you wonder whether the title would have been better if it had just been a straight walking simulator.
The combat fares a little better but even that becomes grating towards the end. Fighting feels satisfying and tactile, but the repetitive combos and enemy types mean that the epic battles close to the finale feel too routine to resonate as much as they should.
