9. Deus Ex
The Originals: 2000's Deus Ex remains regarded as one of the best games ever made for its ground-breaking choice system, impressive augmentation mechanics and thought-provoking narrative. Then came a 2003 sequel most people prefer to forget, even though it really wasn't terrible or anything... The Resurrection: 2011's Human Revolution was touted by most critics and fans as a return to form, even if it still didn't seem quite as assured as the original. Particular vitriol was leveled at the facepalm-inducing boss fights, which felt incongruous to the rest of the game and, rather unsurprisingly, had been farmed out to a different developer to complete. The next game, Mankind Divided, is due for release this coming February. Why It Needs To Stay Dead: As fun as Human Revolution was, it still wasn't especially convincing that this series needs to continue, and in large part that's because of the blatant lack of respect publisher Square Enix have shown towards the series' fans. The outsourced boss fights is one thing, but the highly controversial tiered pre-order system for Mankind Divided was met with such disgust by the gaming community that SE eventually scrapped it. If the game can't be handed off to another publisher, the interest really isn't there for it to keep going.
