11. The Spiked Column - God Of War
Speaking of games that take their weakest components and make a stupidly hard level out of them, the original God of War inspired all sorts of Kratos rage-faces as we attempted its godawful spiked column-climb in Hades. In theory it wasn't that hard - simply climb directly up, edging forwards and holding steady to avoid various clumps of spikes. Simple. Except it wasn't. Firstly, the viewpoint was so hamstrung you could barely see more than a centimetre above, the radius on when the game decided you'd made contact was more random than
Fallout 4's game engine, Kratos' animations weren't remotely tactile or responsive and instead looked more like he was doing star-jumps than taking hold, and one wrong move plummeted you right back down to the ground again. Oh, and the columns themselves were constantly rotating, so left became right as soon as you went from one segment to the next. How lovely.
