3. Dark Souls & Dark Souls III

I'm grouping the two of these together (and losing the middle instalment) because the first and third Dark Souls titles really are outstanding RPGs from top to bottom.

Both feature seemingly endless amounts of character configurations, both have worlds that snake and coil back around on themselves, ensuring that just when you feel lost, you discover an entirely new route back to somewhere new. And both put you slap-bang in the middle of a grandiose tale of epic proportions, asking only that you press on and discover everything yourself.

Souls titles don't hold your hand, and to play one is to experience a game like nothing else. I implore you to do so, if only to see if you'll make it out the other side alive.
