18 Greatest Role-Playing Games Of The Decade (So Far)

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Honestly, it's so close between The Witcher 3 and Skyrim, I'm sure fans like myself could commit entire tomes as to why one or the other reigns supreme.

At the end of the day they're both phenomenal titles, but I had to give the edge to Skyrim for reasons you can read about in the next point. As for Wild Hunt though, CD Projekt RED have crafted one of the most detailed and 'lived in' worlds in all of gaming, somehow without taking the focus off main-man Geralt of Rivia.

Playing as the titular Witcher, you're free to embark on all sorts of monster-slaying quests alongside the main narrative thrust of finding your surrogate daughter Ciri. Geralt's stature as a supernatural bounty hunter for hire solves the problem that tons of open-world games like GTA IV or Mass Effect 3 have, where we're never sure what the character is "supposed" to be doing at any given moment.

To list all of The Witcher's positives would require a few hundred separate articles, but if there's one big takeaway it's the writing. Across the board, every character, line of NPC dialogue and especially the characterisation of Geralt, Ciri and characters like the Baron are all exemplary; truly just brilliantly written personalities you're happy to spend hours upon hours in the company of.

Thus, I salute you, Witcher 3, but there is only one king of this RPG castle...
