8. That’s Not Being Used To Trim A Hedge - Gears Of War (Xbox, 2006)
Gears of War ushered in the HD console generation, showing people exactly what the new round of consoles were capable of. It also introduced some awesome weapons, one of which was a gun with included a chainsaw on its underside: The Lancer. Just listen to this beauty.
Chainsaws had obviously been used in video games before (the original Doom includes one), but never had it been used so uniquely nor with such a grizzly, guttural sound.
Here’s a super neat video of Epic Games Sound Designer Jamey Scott recording the sound effect for the COG Assault Rifle in the original Gears of War. It’s good to see he wore some protective gloves.
