SEGA and Sony had been dominating the games console market for most the late 1980s and first half of the 1990s. The NES and Master System, and the SNES and Mega Drive were all people really wanted to play (despite their being a bit of competition from elsewhere).

That all changed in 1995 with the launch of Sony’s PlayStation.

That sound must give SEGA and Nintendo nightmares as the PlayStation went on to wipe the floor with the competition, catapulting Sony into the market leader position. The newcomer had made a machine that was more powerful and far cooler than the rest, and the boot sound said just that.

Sony has gone on to give its consoles memorable boot up sounds in every console since the original PlayStation. There’s no doubt that the first, signaling its entry in the console market, is the most important.
