3. Cuphead Ignites A Fierce Games Journalism Debate

Possibly the year's most harmless gaming "controversy" emerged when GamesBeat's lead writer Dean Takahashi uploaded a video of himself playing the Cuphead tutorial, which he, ahem, struggled to make his way through.

Takahashi was widely ridiculed for his lack of skill playing the game, with some even calling for him to be fired from GamesBeat. Ultimately this crowbarred open an argument about whether games journalists need to be skilled players in order to be good at their jobs.

Eventually the mob moved on and Takahashi's career survived all the fuss, but for a time, you'd think Takahashi had done something truly scandalous given how ferociously the pitchforks were readied.
