8. The Sewers - Dead Island

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8FsqZZQMpQ We can sit here and debate the what ifs and might-have-beens of Dead Island until we're all blue in the face from the sheer monotony, but it's undeniable that there were some brilliant concepts at play in Techland's open-world zombie sim. By placing an emphasis on scavenging for supplies and modifying weapons with whatever you'd managed to find, Dead Island forced you to think ahead and plan for the worst instead of simply loading up on buckshot and mowing down everything within spitting range. Oftentimes you'd find yourself creeping down a deserted street with nothing but the sound of your own footfalls echoing through your ears, and the lack of firepower meant that you had to really stay on your toes to avoid getting intimate with a zombie's gastrointestinal tract as the undead would descend on your location in a matter of seconds if they even got so much as a whiff. Sometimes escaping the undead was a simple matter of bolting up a door, or hopping on top of a car or rooftop until you came up with a better course of action. But where do you run when every turn is just as likely to lead to a dead-end as it is a pack of flesh-eaters? It was this overpowering sense of helplessness that made the sewer segment of Dead Island so unsettling. The excellent sound design also played a vital role in fostering a deep sense of claustrophobia, as there was no easy way of pinpointing which direction the undead were coming from as their moans echoed off walls.
