19. Sniper Wolf Dies - MGS
Solid Snake is getting close to the underground base which houses a global nuclear threat. He has lost his love interest, he has seen two hostages die mysteriously, and he is understanding that information is being kept from him by his trusted Colonel.
Before Wolf’s final battle, she promises Snake a love letter: a bullet from her gun straight to his heart. Through gritted teeth, Snake vows to make Wolf pay for what she did to Meryl. All the while, Otacon is caught between the woman he loves and the man he knows will save the world.
After the battle, Wolf lies on the ground lung shot. She peacefully tells Snake about her troubled upbringing as a persecuted Kurd and how Big Boss saved her and trained her to become a deadly sniper.
Sniper Wolf then reveals that Meryl was never her real target and that she doesn’t ‘kill for sport.’ After Otacon returned Wolf’s beloved PSG-1 to her and slumps to the ground saying he loved her, Snake mercifully kills the ‘noble’ Wolf before heading towards the underground base.
This scene is poignant from the first game and remains one of the most sincere depictions of antagonists and their motivations.
