After the Xbox One got off to an incredibly rough start for reasons we'll get into later, Microsoft began to rebound in the years that followed with a slew of consumer-friendly features, such as the launch of Xbox Game Pass and, perhaps best of all, a backwards compatibility program.

At Microsoft's 2015 E3 showcase, Phil Spencer revealed that a large number of Xbox 360 games would be playable on the Xbox One at no additional cost.

For digitally-owned copies they would auto-update, while physical games simply required inserting the disc to download the Xbox One-compatible version.

Better yet, these new versions benefitted from FPS and resolution boosts, and Microsoft also later added original Xbox games to the program.

This marked a major PR win for Microsoft, who were still struggling to recoil from the Xbox One's disastrous launch period, and made them seem especially pro-consumer given that Sony offered no such backwards compatibility for the PS4.
