10. Eternal Darkness
NintendoAside from Geist, Nintendo didn't do much to try and compete with 'grown up' western games - but what they did do was more than enough. Hiring relatively unknown studio Silicon Knights for development duties, Nintendo funded and published this unique sanity based horror game. Inspired by HP Lovecraft stories and elements of Cuthulu, Eternal Darkness was a time-travel based horror game which saw its characters slowly lose their minds. The game's sanity meter brought a unique element to Eternal Darkness' gameplay that hasn't been seen in any other games since; after being seen by enemies your sanity meter lowers, causing your camera angle to become skewed, as unsettling whispers and cries haunt you from your TV's speakers. These disturbing touches combined with the great story and interesting magical combat created a gameplay experience that isn't just unique to the Gamecube, but unique to the medium as a whole. This sadly under-performing classic was ahead of its time, and definitely one of the greatest games of its generation. One of the Gamecube's finest hours.
