20 Best Gaming Easter Eggs Of The Decade (So Far)

5. Skyrim's Notched Pickaxe

The most popular of the lot on this list, Skyrim's 'notched pickaxe' actually has multiple meanings. First up, the name itself is a direct nod to that of Markus 'Notch' Persson, creator of Minecraft, but in addition as Notch's company Mojang lost a legal battle to Bethesda following a trademark of the word 'Scrolls' (the latter thought it'd infringe on The Elder Scrolls name), fans have speculated it's something of an apology tact from the designers. Lastly, there's the story of mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine who mysteriously disappeared in 1924 following an expedition up Mt. Everest. With Skyrim's 'Throat of the World' being by far the most dominating part of the game's skyline, it's very possible the axe is a nod to these two as well.
