It's easy to turn your nose up at anything severely different from the norm - especially when that norm involves triple-A budgets, high-octane explosions and realistically-modelled character renders. Titles like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Her Story got the biggest brunt of the "It's not a game!" argument across the year thanks to their interactive elements never forming full gameplay 'loops' that you can enjoy in repetitious amounts, but another flew almost completely under the radar; The Beginner's Guide. Narrated by one Davey Wreden, he attempts to get across the trials and tribulations of game development by showing unused assets from a fellow coder - all whilst conveying how we deal with depression through various level layouts and overall presentation. It must be said that there aren't any objectives or goals to complete, similar to the aforementioned Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, the appeal lies in breathing everything in at your own pace and simply letting the idea of an interactive narrative take you on a particular journey. If you're skeptical of the genre, still give this one a shot - you could end up finding something you'll be talking about for years to come.
