20 Best Sci-Fi Video Games Of All Time
13. Half-Life
The debut product of Valve and the first in the Half-Life series is considered the studios greatest game and one of the best games ever made.
It was back in late 1998 when players were first introduced to Gordon Freeman and had to help him through the Black Mesa Research Facility after an experiment on alien material goes wrong and opens a portal to another world. Developers claimed Doom, Stephen King’s The Mist and Japanese anime film Akira all served as inspiration for the game.
Players must fight their way through alien creatures around the facility and find a way to close the portal. What made Half-Life stand out amongst other games at the time was its scripted sequences. Most games would use cutscenes to relay details of their plot, but Half-Life used scripted sequences all while the player had uninterrupted control of Freeman.
The game received over fifty PC Game Of The Year Awards and got a sequel in Half-Life 2 and spinoffs in Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two.
Although a third instalment in the series is long overdue, fans are still hopeful they will get it...eventually.
