20 Best Sci-Fi Video Games Of All Time
12. Deus Ex
The cyberpunk genre was very hit and miss in its early stages. Games would have excellent concepts and ideas, but would lack the gameplay necessary for them to be an entertaining experience. All that changed when Deus Ex was released.
This action role-playing game combined first person shooter and stealth elements to deliver a truly groundbreaking cyberpunk experience. Players took control of JC Denton, an agent of the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition, in a not too distant future riddled with inequality and crime. Using the nanotechnology in his body, players were given the option to fight aggressively or use stealth to find alternative ways to progress the games story.
What made the story so interesting was that the game was set in an alternative history where many real-world conspiracy theories turned out to be true, mysteries groups such as The Knights Templar, Majestic 12 and The Illuminati would be alluded to throughout the game or be an essential part of the plot.
The game amassed a cult following which led to a modding and playing community lasting fifteen years after the games release.
