It's hard to put into words just how many things Ghost of Tsushima NAILS.

On its face you've got "another open-world game" that borrows stealth mechanics from Assassin's Creed, but delve deeper and Sucker Punch have crafted a passionate, charming and heartfelt love letter to Japanese history and satisfying game design.

Focusing on samurai Jin Kasai's twin relationship to honouring his uncle's teachings and "fighting with honour", it's contrasted with the reality of the Mongol invasion, and seeing how many of his brethren are slain through sheer butchery.

Jin's descent into dishonourable tactics for the greater good is genuinely one of the better stories of the year, and easily one of the best in the open-world genre. Sucker Punch bolster this main campaign with a progression of pure choice, tucking worthwhile upgrades behind dynamically generated NPC missions, and a slew of side characters that compliment everything else in a way that's straight out the Mass Effect 2 playbook.

Ghost of Tsushima is Sucker Punch's first new IP in 11 years, and like Guerrilla with Horizon Zero Dawn, you can tell a team of creatives were determined to make a confident statement for the future.
