9. A Way Out
From the crazed - and yet brilliant - mind of Josef Fares came A Way Out, handpicked by EA as part of their "EA Originals" indie line.
In a risk of pure innovation, the entire thing can only be played in split-screen co-op, though this allowed Fares and his team to design a number of scenarios that double as genre tributes and franchise nods - not to mention the cheesy western action tone giving it an enjoyable identity throughout.
Twin-sneaking through tall bushes and pulling off stealth kills is pure Assassin's Creed, one player engaging in dialogue trees is straight out of Telltale, but here the other can go off and progress the story elsewhere. There are even car chases, third-person cover shootouts, arcades you can compete in and a playable Connect 4.
The ultimate co-op game, seeing this through is just as enjoyable mechanically as its story is to watch unfold.
