20 Best Video Games Of 2018 (So Far)
1. God Of War
What Creative Director Corey Barlog and his team at Sony Santa Monica have created is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Combat is meticulous, weighty and polished, both Kratos and son Atreus have a ton to offer, be it at face value or delving into comments on the glorification and purpose of violence. The game overall is a blend of open-world elements, Metroidvania nods and Dark Souls cues. Not to mention, there's every stylistic trick and backstory rework brought across from God of War as a franchise.
Not one set-piece that doesn't land, not one battle isn't enjoyable. Every character is solidly written with even a literal talking head being a more memorable and definable presence than the majority of triple-A titles' entire casts.
By journey's end you'll barely have scratched the surface, and by writing a story whose proposed conclusion is a clever way to instil the want for wider exploration and a desire to spend time with these characters in this world, God of War transcends even its own structure as a "point A to point B" video game.
Phenomenal.
