20 Best Video Games Of 2018 (So Far)
19. The Swords Of Ditto
From one exemplary looking game to another, The Swords of Ditto literally looks like a high-budget Cartoon Network show made controllable. Think Steven Universe or Over The Garden Wall and you're pretty much there.
Gameplay-wise it's a Link to the Past/Zelda-inspired dungeon crawler, but with some neat roguelike elements that re-roll the entire world every five in-game days. Everything is procedurally generated but with solid geo-meshing rules, meaning everything makes sense in terms of enemies, locations and resource placement, essentially meaning each five day gauntlet is a "new game" every time.
Disappointingly though, whilst the visuals are stunning and these mechanics are solid on paper, eventually Ditto starts to come apart. You realise that the game's challenge is more in number-crunching than anything skill-based, and the sheer amount of time required to see everything is staggering.
Developers OneBitBeyond have released multiple patches tweaking everything from item spawns to the amount of time you spend on a given run, showing even they aren't sure how best to balance the myriad elements at play.
Still, it's so damn close, Swords of Ditto is absolutely worth your time.
