Taking a massive risk and deviating away from the more corridor-crawly nature of past Metros, Exodus was shown off as a flagship title for the Xbox One X.
Still being a looker thanks to exemplary lighting and smoke effects - plus some great environmental work - this semi-final instalment was all about getting out the confines of the underground, and out into more survivalist spaces on the surface.
Dotting deserts and mountainous terrain are enemy encampments and various mutated creatures in this post-apocalypse, the sensibility being one of caution and careful reward.
It may have annoyed hardcore fans thanks to shifting focus away from the iconic snaking tunnels of the titular Metro itself, but what we got was filled with confidence and potential for the future.
