2. Quiet Can't Wear Clothes Because She Breathes (And Drinks) Through Her Skin (MGS V)

MGS V is goddamn fantastic, but there are a few things that just don't sit well, no matter how you look at them. Spoilers for Quiet's character arc - specifically the origin of her powers. One such divisive "Is it just sex appeal or is there something way more sinister afoot?" point, is the portrayal of half-naked sniper, Quiet. In the run-up to release we got all sorts of boob-filled shots of her character model, with the (apparently mistranslated) comment from creator Hideo Kojima being that once we'd found out why she was so up for getting her kit off, we'd be "ashamed of our words and deeds".

In reality though, what did that amount to? The rationale that - because of her 'parasite therapy' essentially rebuilding her entire body after the burns she suffered in the opening scene - she breathes and takes in nutrients through her skin, therefore must have as much of it on display as possible. Y'know what that's similar too? Twilight. Twilight's wolf-man heartthrob Jacob had a very similar rationale for why Taylor Lautner forever had his shirt off; it was down to his maturing lycanthropic blood simply making him 'too hot', so he had to strip down. Quiet's story arc is absolutely fantastic, and I'm firmly in the camp that having full-on sex appeal doesn't 'ruin' a character whatsoever - but the justification that is here is so hilariously dumb it's... well, it's so Metal Gear it hurts.
