20 Biggest WTF Gaming Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
16. Hotline Miami's Plot Twist Literally Blows Your Character's Mind
Dennaton's Hotline Miami is hands-down some of the most fun you'll ever have with a controller pad. Seriously, when its positively pounding electro soundtrack is thundering away in the background and you're dispatching rooms of gangsters in fountains of blood and shotgun shells - it's exquisite. The story too - for the first game in particular - is incredible, the biggest revelation coming that all the wanton slaughter you've been indulging in, has all been inside your head. Although your character was a brain-washed killer beforehand, a hitman of sorts puts you in coma, forcing Jacket to live out his darkest revenge-filled fantasies in his head. There's a bit more to it than that, but the reveal itself is expertly handled. After reliving all the encounters leading up to the point where he was shot, the game's top-down retro pixel art aesthetic sees Jacket journey outside the level and into a hospital room - where he sees himself in a bed, hooked up to life support. It's all too much from that point, and as your established reality comes crashing down through a number of brilliantly grainy video tracking effects, Jacket's mind is literally blown apart by the realisation itself.
