20 Biggest WTF Moments In Assassin's Creed History

2. Fist Fighting The Pope Inside The Vatican (Assassin's Creed 2)

Assassin's Creed 2, arguably the best instalment in the series, has perhaps the most ridiculous ending of them all. After battling hordes of enemies on horseback outside the Vatican, Ezio makes it inside and finally confronts his arch-nemesis, Rodrigo Borgia, otherwise known as Pope Alexander VI. What happens next? Well, Rodrigo becomes supercharged, at which point he engages Ezio in a round of fisticuffs. The game then turns into an episode of Dragonball Z, with Ezio and Rodrigo taking it in turns to punch each other as hard as they can.

Assassin's Creed 2 literally ends with Ezio fist fighting the Pope inside the Vatican, right before he's contacted by extra-terrestrials, who later turn out to be members of an ancient civilisation of mythological Gods.

There have been weirder moments elsewhere in the series, many of which have been covered on this list, but nothing can quite top the overwhelming absurdity of this entire sequence. It's the main reason that later games in the series have struggled to hold down their plots; they've had to contend with all this nonsense introduced in Assassin's Creed 2.

So, while it's still easily the best in the series, it's got a lot to answer for.
