18. The Story Of 'N'

N was introduced to the fifth generation games and instantly established himself as something of an enigma. Early in the story, he battles the player a few times and claims to be able to understand what the Pokémon are saying to each other around him.

Despite apparently having a major aversion to seeing Pokémon suffer, he continues to battle the player as he attempts to understand if the creatures are being treated kindly by their trainer. His cruel-to-be-kind approach is extremely strange, but his story becomes even more unusual as we learn more about him.

In a late encounter in N's room, the player discovers that he's actually a puppet of Ghetsis, who had rescued the boy after finding him living in the wild with Pokémon. Suddenly the whole story obtains an element of some really unsettling activity with a minor, and the final encounters in Black & White contain some of the darkest story moments that the series has ever produced.
