With Super Mario 64 dominating the family market in 1996, Sony realised the PlayStation needed a child-friendly title to match it, which led to the creation of Spyro. The dragon-centric platformer was a triumph, which led to two stellar sequels.

Sadly, Spyro is one of those franchises that peaked too early. Despite releasing over ten more follow-ups, none of them came close to competing with its predecessors.

However, Spyro had the perfect opportunity to be rejuvenated. After Toys for Bob saw tremendous success with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy remake, they released a graphically enhanced version of the first three Spyro games the following year.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy got great reviews across the board and sold over ten million units, proving the series still had plenty of fire. After Toys for Bob worked on the highly praised Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, the next logical step was to give Spyro another shot.

Instead, the developers got to work on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sequels. Even though it was sensible to release a new instalment a few years ago while Spyro fever was in the air, nothing came of it.
