20 Dead Gaming Franchises That NEED To Come Back

3. Chrono Trigger

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver
Square Enix

Due to Chrono Trigger's time-travel mechanics, sprawling story, creative combat, and exquisite score, it's easy to see why it's maintained its legacy as a classic for so long.

Despite setting the bar to seemingly insurmountable levels, the follow-up, Chrono Cross for the PSOne, managed to meet them. Boasting an incredible multiverse-travelling mechanic and a whopping 45 playable characters, the sequel was just as ambitious as its predecessor.

Sadly, Chrono Cross didn't fare well, since it was released when the PlayStation was flooded with other hyped titles, like Silent Hill, Tekken 3, and Final Fantasy VIII, also developed by Square.

And yet, the lack of sales didn't dull Cross' reputation. After being re-released on modern systems in 2022, gamers of today got to experience this underrated JRPG.

Of course, Square is currently busy with Final Fantasy sequels, reboots, and remasters, so revisiting Chrono isn't exactly a priority.

But based on the love Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross still receives, it really should be. And looking at the way the previous instalments pushed the hardware to its absolute limit, it's a wonder what a third Chrono game could accomplish on current consoles.
