14. Escorting Emma Emmerich - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
KonamiEveryone hates escort missions: they involve the player babysitting a weaker, usually unarmed character through a hostile environment in order to progress to the next level. Why do they suck so much? Usually it's because of poor AI or the fact that it just kills the game's pacing stone dead, but what about when you throw water into the mix as well? Gamers also almost universally despise water levels due to the difficulty and awkward physics involved, so combining these two maligned mechanics into one section equals...this abomination. The mission involves escorting Otacon's timid engineer stepsister Emma to help disable the Patriots' AI, GW. You're forced to hold her hand as she freaks out over bugs, and ferry her through various bodies of water because, get this, she's afraid of the damn stuff. Then you need to use your sniper rifle to help protect her as she travels along part of the Big Shell on her own, only for her to be subsequently killed by Vamp anyway. What a waste, and what a laborious lull this was in an otherwise pretty great game. Seriously, do all escort characters need to be so pathetic?
