Developer: HAL Laboratory Platform: GameCube Release: 2001 Who would've thought that a game that lets you fight Pikachu as Samus would end up having one of the best combat systems ever made? Super Smash Bros. Melee was the second entry in the popular series, and widely considered the best thanks to its sizeable roster and excellent controls. Rather than reskinning an existing fighter template, Super Smash Bros. is all about forcing your opponent off the screen, with character's 'health' measured by a percentage metre. The higher this percentage, the further they're knocked back by enemy attacks. There's no lengthy combos that need learning, and every ability can executed with the press of a single button and stick direction. It sounds simple, and it's very easy for new players to get into, but the game has a huge cult following and sizeable competitive scene.
