Forget the disappointing third title, Diablo II is the ultimate hack and slash action RPG. Responsible for many a misspent youth, Blizzards second entry in the legendary Diablo series was a huge critical and commercial success. It's hard to put into words just how mesmerising a long session with Diablo III could be, with its grind of getting better gear, in order to get better gear, in order to get better gear. The story behind Diablo II was never a major focus, but many of the characters such as Deckard Cain and the titular Diablo himself have become video game classics. As with many of the other games on this list, it was the online multiplayer that made Diablo II such a killer release. Blizzard's free Battle.net online service contributed a great deal to game's success, allowing players to help or thwart each other as they attempted to pick up the shiniest loot.
