20 Greatest Shooters Ever Made

9. Quake II

The original Quake might be the game that kick-started the PC FPS revolution, but Quake II outdid its predecessor in almost every way, proving to be just as influential in the long run. With OpenGL support out of the box and an engine that allowed for dazzling skyboxes and coloured lighting effects, Quake II was a stunningly beautiful game for its time. Rather than the bizarre medieval world of Quake, the second game went for a sci-fi re-theme, helping to establish a futuristic setting that would later dominate the FPS genre. Network support was also greatly improved, making online multiplayer easier to get into and more reliable than ever before. The single-player campaign is now considered a classic, and has since become a mainstay for speed run enthusiasts. Quake II really was the ultimate package for old-school FPS gamers.
