Developer: The Creative Assembly Released: 2004 Which is the 'best' in the series is a strong point of contention among Total War fans, but Rome: Total War makes a good case for itself. From the perfectly constructed campaign to the incredible variety of units, Rome: Total War just feels right. The attention to historical accuracy in Rome: Total War is astounding, even being used in a couple of TV programs to reproduce famous battles. While the battles themselves are the central focus of the game, the politics and grand strategy are also incredibly satisfying. Rome: Total War is about as good as historical strategy gets, and it's easy to see why fans were so disappointed with the underwhelming Total War: Rome 2.
