16. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Remember that scene from Metal Gear Solid 4 where Raiden re-entered the series€™ chronology in a storm of break-dancing kicks, backflip bullet-dodges and robot-decapitating sword-swipes? Revengeance is an entire game of exactly that, and then some. Created by whacky fun-loving Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, they were seemingly given the keys to an actual Metal Gear and asked to turn things up to 11. Thus the action in Rising mimics that of the recent Devil May Cry reboot, as well as Bayonetta itself, featuring a brilliantly easy hack €˜n slash template that allowed the developer to drop Raiden into increasingly more jaw-dropping scenarios, and turn the control back over to you. A particular highlight for any longtime fan is Raiden€™s superhuman strength being applied to the legs of the skyscraper-high Metal Gear Ray, only for him to lob the entire thing a few blocks down the street, before leaping up and cutting it in two. From that description you€™ve probably already decided if this is the sort of ludicrous direction you€™re happy to get involved with, and if it is, by all means come for a swim in Lake Ridiculous, as the water€™s warm with rich fan-fiction and wish-fulfilment. Although later in the story things take a turn for the more teenage-wet dream, going into more Zack Snyder-esque territory of having one-liners for the sake of one-liners, the combat remains incredibly fun throughout, with some very inventive boss characters and upgradeable moves padding out what is a fun alternative take on otherwise mostly serious source material.
