Year: 2007 Platform: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux Swedish developers Frictional Games were thrust into unexpected fame, following the release of the widely acclaimed sleeper hit Amnesia: The Dark Descent. That masterpiece was by no means their first game though, which was predated by the Penumbra trilogy. While all three games in the Penumbra series are horror classics, the first and second are the strongest. Almost everything done well by Amnesia: The Dark Descent can trace its origins to the Penumbra games, which featured a similar physics system, first-person psychological horror and exploration. One big difference is that the Penumbra series allowed the player to combat enemies, though avoiding them was heavily encouraged. If you've completed both Amnesia games and you're looking for more terrifying horror to delve into you could do a whole lot worse than the Penumbra games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBlYjeO22xA
