20 Greatest Zombie Games Ever

11. Dead Space

Developer: Visceral Games Released: 2008 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC Whether or not you consider the Necromorphs to be zombies per se, the first Dead Space certainly features many elements that make up a traditional zombie title. You've got a lone character wondering around a desolate environment, battling against monsters that were formed from the corpses of dead humans, so there's no reason to quibble. Particularly in its opening hours, Dead Space is a tour-de-force of atmospheric survival horror. Instead of the usual "shoot 'em in the head" mechanic, the game uniquely requires the player to accurately shoot off the Necromorphs' limbs in order to properly subdue them. Later games in the Dead Space series went for a more action-orientated approach than the stellar original, which is a shame considering how effective the first game was as a pure survival horror.
