Whereas Nintendo had Square and a number of other developers who were more than capable of keeping them stocked up with quality JRPGs, SEGA had to look internally if they were going to find the perfect JRPG for the Megadrive. They found it with the excellent Phantasy Star IV.
While the game was graphically behind the times, it presented an interesting plot that twisted and turned all over the place, setting it up as the cream of the crop for fans of the genre who couldn't get their hands on a SNES.
Couple that with the superb presentation - which offered a cinematic effect that few other games of the period could rival - and you have the Megadrive's best RPG. Of course, it saw a very limited release in the UK so prices have sky-rocketed, but it is available on the Ultimate Collection compilation disc as well as on the Virtual Console and Steam.
