19. The Nemesis Introduction – Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Resident Evil 3 came along right at the end of the PS1 era, and despite being a great instalment it’s not remembered as fondly by fans. A shame, since it features some great setpieces and a Hall Of Fame villain in the Nemesis.
This Terminator-like nightmare chases the player relentlessly throughout the game; he can run faster than you, follow you from room to room and is equipped with a rocket launcher. His introduction is perhaps the terrifying moment in the game, when he slays Brad Vickers in a cutscene before coming after you next. If you stand your ground and fight then he wipes the floor with you, and if you run away he chases you throughout the police station.
It’s a superb intro, and set the scene perfectly for the rest of the game.
