20 More Things Only Dark Souls Fans Will Understand

3. Accidentally Murdering/Aggroing An NPC

The NPCs of Dark Souls are a weird bunch. Despite their general strangeness, most of them have some form of use, whether it's selling you stuff, upgrading your weapons or pushing you off a cliff.

They can also nearly all die by your hand.

It's very easy to do, and pretty sure every player at some point has managed it. Maybe you were about to upgrade your weapon and were standing next to Andre the blacksmith.

You got called from the room and put your controller down, and somehow it hit the attack button and you attacked him in cold blood, making him constantly hostile (Andre's a bit more sturdy than most and won't die instantly).

Most of the merchants ain't quite so hardy; they can die with an accidental swipe of a sword.

The problem is an action in Dark Souls is generally not without consequence; killing one of the NPCs has a knock-on effect on further questlines and you may be locked out of certain things in your particular playthrough. There's no way to go back once it's done either.
