20 More Things Only Dark Souls Fans Will Understand

15. An Innate Fear Of Anything That Inflict Curse

While poison and toxic are among the worst status effects you can be inflicted with in Dark Souls, there's one that's so much worse. That is, of course, being cursed.

Remember the first time you ever got cursed in Dark Souls? Not only did you die instantly (probably losing a load of progress too), but you then found yourself back at the bonfire, with only HALF of your health.

Now Dark Souls is hard at the best of times, but trying it with only half of your health bar? Boy oh boy, that's a whole 'nother prospect entirely.

You can only remove curse by purchasing Purging Stones, which you likely had no idea of the first time it happened to you.

You can buy these for either 3000 souls from Oswald of Carim in the Gargoyle Belltower, or 6000 from the Female Undead Merchant near Firelink Shrine. Neither are generally anywhere near areas with things that inflict curse, so good luck getting back!

You quickly learn to be absolutely terrified of any enemy that inflicts curse. The worst are the basilisks; these fast-moving, bulbous-eyed monsters love to leap over you and envelop you in a cloud of purple smog, which causes curse build-up extremely rapidly. Get surrounded by these guys, and you can kiss half your health goodbye.
