20 Most Embarrassing Video Game Moments Since 2000
9. GTA San Andreas' Hot Coffee Mod
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is often considered to be one of the best games of all time. It is also home to one of the most controversial mods of all time - Hot Coffee.
What the Hot Coffee Mod did was allow players to partake in an interactive sex mini-game that was hidden away in the game code. The game would come around at the end of a successful date with your in-game girlfriend. She would invite you in for some coffee, which is where the mod name originated from. Then you'd be able to go to town on her, fully clothed of course.
This hidden mini-game coming to light sparked a whole load of controversy, not just for Rockstar, but for the gaming industry as a whole. First, the rating of San Andreas was changed from M to AO for Adult's Only. This lead to the game being upright banned in Australia and taken off shelves entirely in North America. Eventually, Rockstar would re-release the game with said hidden code removed allowing the game to fall back under an M rating. They would also release a patch perfectly titled "Cold Coffee" for PC versions.
Class Action lawsuits were filed and Hillary Clinton would even step in to suggest tighter restrictions on video game sales. Nowadays full blown interactive sex scenes in video games aren't that odd *wink wink, Heavy Rain.* However, this was at a time when video games were under fire from all directions, and a hidden interactive sex mini-game did nothing but fuel the blaze.
