Microsoft sure didn't want Sony to have all the credit when it came to awful console reveals, and they showed that with the absolute atrocity that was the Xbox One reveal. Even the name, when it was first revealed, saw the internet have a field day, constantly mocking the seemingly out of place title for an eighth generation console, and the third Xbox.

One of the biggest missteps Microsoft took in the announcement of the Xbox One was their new stance on DRM. At the reveal, it was announced that games would be tied to each user's Micosoft account and that the disc was only needed to install games. You could share said games with friends and family, but only a limited amount of times, and every Xbox would be required to connect to the internet once every 24 hours to confirm these usage rights. If an Xbox couldn't connect it would lock you out of said games until connected again. Even Sony would go on to absolutely smash on Microsoft during E3 on how easy it was to share games on the PS4.

On top of the DRM was Microsoft's new stance that the Kinect was the end-all-be-all accessory. It was, at a time, required to be connected for the Xbox One to work and would always be on. Which lead critics to joke Microsoft would always be watching you. This coupled with Microsoft's complete shift of focus from gaming to entertainment lead many to believe that the console was no longer a gaming console, but a home entertainment system.

Eventually, Microsoft would make a 180 on almost every core feature they first showcased thanks to the relentless amount of negative press they were getting, and since then the Xbox One has seen success, but most will never forget that monumentally rocky start.
